Tour - Austrian Alps

Dates of tour: Thursday 10th - Thursday 17th September 2020.(link to pdf version of this tour page)

Starting Point: Mitterberg-Sankt Martin, near Gröbming, Styria, Austria, Thursday evening 10th September 2020

Finishing Point: Hotel de la Poste, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Thursday morning 17th September 2020

Austrian Alps. The last time we visited this part of the world was in 2015 on our 'Alps East to West' tour. We start this fantastic week with three days around Gröbming, the operational centre for the Ennstal Classic, with great roads and scenery to enjoy.

Provisional Itinerary:

Our starting point: We meet at our first hotel, the four-star Landhotel Häuserl im Wald, Mitterberg-Sankt Martin, near Gröbming, Austria. You may wish to drive there, but the dates allow for an overnight Motorail journey on the OBB NightJet service from Dusseldorf to Innsbruck. Loading in Dusseldorf takes place at 8pm on Wednesday 9th September, and you have the choice from a range of sleeper options on the overnight train. Our cars will be transported on the train, which arrives in Innsbruck, about 600 miles later, just after 8.30 on Thursday morning.

OBB NightJet: Your car can be transported from Dusseldorf to Innsbruck on the overnight train for €149,00. Details of the sleeping accommodation options can be found at https://www.nightjet.com/en/komfortkategorien, and the prices are:

Please indicate your preferences on your Booking Form.

Our adventure together: Whether you drive to Austria or join us in Dusseldorf for the overnight train, we meet at Gröbming on Thursday evening for three days in the mountains. We are surrounded by fantastic roads and scenery, and there is even time to visit the historic city of Salzburg and the lakes to the east of the city, about 65 miles from our base.

Friday 11th, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September: Exploring the countryside and hostelries in the mountains around Gröbming. We have several rally route maps from the Ennstal Classic that have helped guide our planning - you will not be disappointed.

Monday 14th September: Head south and west through the spectacular Austrian mountains, by way of Turracher Höhe and Nockalmstrasse to the five-star Grandhotel Lienz, our hotel for tonight. About 140 miles.

Tuesday 15th September: We leave Lienz and head by way of spectacular Dolomite roads through the South Tyrol into Italy, to the four-star Hotel de la Poste, Cortina d'Ampezzo, our base for two nights.

Wednesday 16th September: Our final day together - South Tyrol was part of Austria until the end of WW1, so enjoy the final day of our Austrian Alps tour in the Dolomite Mountains, which some think are still part of Austria!

As ever, we will celebrate the final evening of our tour with a special dinner and awards ceremony.

Thursday 17th September: We bid farewell and head for home. There is an overnight NightJet Motorail from Innsbruck back to Dusseldorf this evening, with cars being loaded after 7.30pm. Or you may prefer to continue the driving pleasure and take the long run for home.
