Dordogne Tour

Dates of tour: Monday 6th - Monday 13th July 2020.(link to a pdf version of this tour page)

The Dordogne. This magnificent river flows from its source at Puy de Sancy, the highest point of the Massif Central, to the Bay of Biscay near Bordeaux. Our adventure takes us from sea to source, from vineyards to volcanoes, along roads ideal for our cars. On our journey we may encounter hazards in the form of St Emilion vineyards, spectacular gorges and mountains where the views are not to be missed, and volcanoes, described as 'dormant' rather than 'extinct', even though the last volcanic activity was 11,000 years ago!

Provisional Itinerary:

Starting Point:For those coming from Le Mans on Monday 6th July, we travel through rural France to our overnight halt at Relais de Comodoliac, St Junien, on the Vienne River in the Limousin. About 185 miles.

For those who have not been with us at Le Mans, you may either join us at St Junien on Monday evening, or arrive at Hotel Les Secrets, Salleboeuf, on Monday, a day early, for the same price.

Tuesday 7th July: A gentler day today - about 130 miles to our hotel, Les Secrets, Chateau Pey la Tour, Salleboeuf, to the east of Bordeaux, our base for two nights.

Wednesday 8th July: A day to explore the region around St Emilion, including a vineyard visit. There is a memorial in nearby Castillon to Sir John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, 7th Baron Talbot, who was killed at the Battle of Castillon in 1453.

Thursday 9th July: We follow La Dordogne, heading upriver, crossing from rive gauche to rive droite several times. Along the way we encounter some wonderful old towns, following roads perfect for cars of our era. Our destination is Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne for one night at Hotel Beaulieu.

Friday 10th July: Our journey continues o'er hill and through gorge. We visit the Barrage d'Aigle, a massive dam known as the Resistance Dam - all will be revealed. Plenty of scope today to go off-piste, with the key outcome for us all to arrive at our hotel for three nights, Hotel Le Puy Ferrand, Le Mont Dore, just beneath the massive volcanic cone of Puy de Sancy, the source of both La Dore and La Dogne. Their convergence produces La Dordogne near to our hotel.

Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July: We are in the mountains, with two days to explore the volcanoes of the Auvergne, to further explore the gorges of the Dordogne, or to ascend the cable-car to the top of Puy de Sancy for views over the Massif Central. Plenty to choose from. As ever, we will celebrate the final evening of our tour with a special dinner and awards ceremony..

Monday morning, 13th July: We bid farewell and head for home.
